Please tell us what you think! OCLC CJK Users Group 2008 Annual Meeting Attendee Questionnaire |
We’re glad you could attend the OCLC CJK Users Group 2008 Annual Meeting today. In order to help us make next year’s program as beneficial as possible, please take a few minutes to answer the following questions and return to Karen Wei, Chair, OCLC CJK Users Group. Thank you!
1. How did you hear about this meeting?
□ Eastlib only – 19 (35.2%)
□ Eastlib + OCLC-CJK listserv – 19 (35.2%)
□ OCLC-CJK listserv only – 12 (22.2%)
□ Colleague – 1 (1.8%)
□ Did not specify – 3 (5.6%)
2. Did you register?
□ Yes – 50 (92.6%)
□ No – 3 (5.6%) – did not know of need for registration
□ Did not respond – 1 (1.8%)
3. Have you attended an OCLC CJK Users Group annual meeting in the past?
□ Yes – 45 (83.3%)
□ No – 9 (16.7%)
4. Was the length of today’s meeting:
□ just right – 29 (53.7%)
□ did not answer – 13 (24.1%)
□ too long – 12 (22.2%)
□ too short – 0 (0%)
5. What did you specifically like about today’s meeting?
- All 3 parts are equally good; the first 2 are informative and the interactive discussion is useful
- WorldCat as Tool – WorldCat Selection; WorldCat Collection Analysis and how our colleague librarians use these products
- OCLC’s Asian Pacific operations; Excellent interactive updates on the recent developments in OCLC – very clearly delivered; very useful to have an update from OCLC representatives about their current products and services, including changes that have been made and how they relate to CJK collection
- Presentations – discussion of collection analysis tool, bib citation software, U of HK e-books cataloging; OCLC WorldCat Local
- Questions & Answers; Interactive afternoon session – Very informative; well organized
- When the chair repeated the questions
- Enhancing vendor records & parallel records by David Whitehair; David explained issues very clear, also has sense of humor; Clear answer from David on Waseda records and authority records
- It was a necessary meeting after the merger of RLG-CJK with OCLC WorldCat
- Opportunity to talk/ask questions face to face with someone from OCLC
- Mission possible by Connie Lam; Connie’s presentation on cataloging e-resources was excellent. David Whitehair’s update on OCLC activities and accomplishments is always clearly presented and highly informative.
6. Was the afternoon interactive discussion session useful? Why? Why not?
- Probably most useful for catalogers
- Yes, it was addressing my questions; very practical; cleared some confused concepts; helped to clarify some practice and very useful in identifying what are the concerns of other libraries
- Yes, we could ask specific and related follow-up questions such as Waseda records right away; the discussion provided many useful information; I got answers relating to OCLC directly; lots of shared common questions were answered, solved a lot of doubt on the changes; I was able to recognize more problems from the questions
- Q&A session; field 936; the afternoon interactive discussion session was useful.
- We need slides for the answers because we cannot follow the details, such as # of fields; would appreciate posting those answers on the list [Note: it was our intention to post presentation slides and Q&A after the meeting to include questions/answers from the floor—Karen Wei]
- Some of the basic questions should be addressed prior to the Q&A session to save time, e.g. series vs mono. Dispute on Waseda records should be limited to discussion held privately; too dominated by certain experienced catalogers
- I wanted to hear the whole discussion (very informed presenters and interesting topics), but left early because I was just meetinged out.
- Yes, but please repeat all the questions
- It was useful but the organization of questions could be better structured
- To be honest, I found it too long. There was some useful information, but it seems to me that much of the information exchange (especially about specific cataloging procedures) could more easily be carried out on a listserv or wiki.
- Not really. Most are related to cataloging. I am not doing cataloging.
7. What other topics would you like to hear about from OCLC?
- OCLC Selection and vendor records; WorldCat Collection Analysis
- OCLC’s priority projects for the future; future plans on various projects; new CJK programs
- New features on updated revision of OCLC Connexion; to brief us any new searching method developed
- How can CONTENTdm be used for CJK digital projects
- NACO original script implementation timeline; Non-Latin scripts in authority records
- ILLiad or other ILL system that supports non-Roman scripts
- Tips/tricks on cataloging films fast/accurate without going through the whole movies
- How OCLC does quality control of the records loaded into its databases
- IR libraries concerns and smaller group discussion
- What’s the best way to achieve “globalization” and “local efficiencies,” i.e. Waseda records (or other countries records) but not parallel issues
- Whether OCLC will give CJK users the choice of more than one level of MARC records, e.g. add the 3rd level description for the rare book bibliographic records
- Cataloging related
- Loading of ONIX records
- Anything that may have impact on library services (collection development, reference etc)
- Useful tools or software developed for OCLC to increase both productivity and record quality.
8. What other topics would you like to be included in the Users Group program?
- WorldCat Selection (more detail); WorldCat Local (more in depth) – import on cataloging with adding local information or local editing
- Some negative aspects of the new products, such as the WorldCat Local.
- Exchanges of CJK data sets with Asian countries
- Prefer presentations about how institutions are using OCLC services, such as the one by Hyokyoung Yi, and the one by the librarian from Hong Kong.
- Special projects and best practices from member libraries; Identify 10 highlighted news among the CEAL libraries during the year and give a snapshot report
- Waseda record issues; follow up on enhancement credits
- A CJK OCLC training session for former RLIN users
- Vendor records on e-resources
- Introductory information for newer participants
- Media/film
- OCLC’s policy for institutions that don’t follow AACR? It is annoying to edit these records if we are NOT allowed to create parallel records
- The RLG programs work agenda and program reports??
- Perhaps cataloging nitty-gritty, with cheat sheets to clearly and simply explain the workings of Connexion Client 2.10. This would be especially useful to newly hired catalogers and former RLIN users. Perhaps using online tutorial style, with program that capture mouse movement
9. Do you have a recommendation for speakers at future OCLC CJK Users Group annual meetings?
- Karen Calhoun
- OCLC high level administrators on the future developments and programs at OCLC
- The RLG program working group representative, e.g. Karen Smith-Yoshimura
- Speakers were ok; thanks for the copy of presentation; it helps
- Hold questions till all presenters are done with the presentations for each panel
- Letters on screen shots are too small; suggest speakers use less screen shots; spend less time on things that are intuitive which we can easily get by ourselves
- For cataloging nitty-gritty, it might be good to have an experienced cataloger to go step-by-step through the process.
10. Suggestions for improvement?
- Facilities
- Is there any reason you have a meeting in a different hotel where AAS is held? It is a bit inconvenient
- Could you please hold the meeting at the AAS Conference hotel? Back and forth two locations are tiring…
- Larger meeting room and more interaction opportunities between OCLC and EA librarians.
- In Q&A session, people who asked questions should use microphone
- Meeting time/length
- Suggest meeting from 9:00 to noon or 12:30 at the latest. CEAL is beginning to mail reports before the conference rather than present them orally; leaving more time for discussion, exchanges, Q&A and presentations that can only be delivered in person. This move toward more substance and a sharper focus is getting positive feedback. The OCLC CJK Users Group might also consider that approach.
- Since many people will depart or plan to depart on the day when the OCLC CJK Users Group annual meeting is held, it will provide more opportunity for more people to participate in the meeting if the meeting is condensed to 3.5 to 4 hours in the morning. For today’s meeting, in the morning it was a full room and the afternoon it was soon turning into a half room
- Compact the meeting to half-day only; reports that do not require interactive discussion can be sent ahead
- Presentations/Q&A session
- For Q&A PPT, I would like to see A parts on slides, too; I hope we can get an answer sheet of the Q & A session [Note: yes, we intended to do so along with questions/answers from the floor—Karen Wei]
- More Q&A discussion or answers should be written as well as questions
- Speakers should have prepared power point slides to show the cases clearly instead of oral presentation; show us records
- OCLC update report is a bit long and overlaps with CEAL Committee on Technical Processing and other presentations
- Too much time was spent on the same topic, such as vendor records
- Allocate time for attendees for Q&As
- OCLC processing
- OCLC guidelines for WorldCat on CJK records, including Waseda records
- Provide standard cataloging procedures, common practice with OCLC on OCLC website
- If OCLC is the world records database we should respect each record cataloged in its own language’s integrate. Therefore, we should create a parallel record, not update a foreign language record into an English record
- Keep the values of 3rd level descriptive (e.g. RLG rare book records) cataloging records??
- I hope OCLC would give CJK cataloging more credit
- Allow to create PR for Waseda records
- Others
- Send invitation to Eastlib in addition to OCLC-CJK list-serv. Or maybe you did, but I missed it. That is why I did not pre-register [Note: I did send to both lists—Karen Wei]
- Miss the “earthy” humor of Karen Smith-Yoshimura
- Thanks so much for the hard work this takes to do…
- Thank you very much!
